The average concert requires millions of vocal collisions, while the artist may move the equivalent of 4 miles. It's past time to reframe our thinking on singers, and treat them like athletes. In describing the singer-athlete model, we'll guide the audience through an understanding of how their instrument works (anatomy, acoustics/resonance, breath and power). From there, we'll build an understanding of whole-body physical and mental health and some basics of performance coaching. This will then build into medical issues (allergies, reflux, smoking/vaping, thyroid, etc), their impact on the voice, and management tools. Finally, we'll explore the sound of injury and how to use self-detection strategies to identify early injury and reverse it. Videos of stroboscopy (scopes of vocal fold vibration) will be used to clarify concepts.
